WHO WE ARE?

WELCOME TO HYANGJAKOT

Its the family at Ama’s Homestay that makes it so special. That’s why we would like to give you a small introduction.

Ama

With an approximate age of around 85, Ama is the eldest and therefore head of the family. Her exact age is not known as there are no records of her birth. She and her husband Ba had eight children two of which, unfortunately, died at a young age. Whatever her age, she is still very active in and around the house. She can often be seen collecting wood, gardening, cooking always moving at her slow determined pace. She has a wealth of experience in mountain survival. In the past, many villagers would visit her for her Ayurvedic healing capabilities. But above all, it’s her warm and welcoming heart that makes her so lovable.

Choi

Choi, a Korean architect, loved Nepal so much he decided to settle down here. He wound up marrying one of Ama’s daughters, Santa, and they have two young children John and Yul. Choi and Santa run Ama’s house, welcoming, cooking and doing basically anything else to make their guests comfortable. Choi will also take guests out for day tours or even trekkings for longer periods. He is quite knowledgable of the mountains and Nepalese culture. His good nature and humor are a pleasure to be around.

Santa

Santa is the youngest of Ama’s daughters. Together with Choi, she makes sure that guests are comfortable and have everything they need. Her sunny disposition greets you every morning welcoming you with a fresh cup of tea or coffee. It’s a pleasure to watch her and Choi raise their children while working at the homestay.

Ujeli

Ujeli is another one of Ama’s daughters who also lives at the homestay. She runs a small shop where locals come to buy snacks and drinks. If you need anything during your stay she’s always happy to help. You will often see her quietly working in the background busy cleaning, gathering, etc.

Henk Jan and Mila

Henk Jan and Mila are connected to the family through Mila’s former (tribal) marriage to one of Ama’s sons. Mila lived with Durga and the family for 3 years in the 90’s and although the marriage did not last, contact with the family has always remained. We have visited the family in Nepal numerous times and always cherish the warm welcome and experience. We want to make this unique opportunity available to others. Besides having a wonderful experience of daily life and culture in the mountains your visit will also help support this way of life.
